Today I am posting about my most FAVORITE jeans pattern for kids!  The Small Fry Skinny Jeans by Titchy Threads!  I had the pleasure of testing this pattern and fell in love with them then.

For this post, I decided I would make a pair for my girls since they are outgrowing the jeans I just made for them several months ago.  I found this fun floral stretch denim from Michael Levine at the LA fabric district and knew I would make a pair of skinny jeans out of it.

Included in the pattern are lots of tips on using topstitching thread.  I had never used it before and thanks to the tips I didn’t have a problem at all.  I love the professional look it gives by doing the topstitching option.  I had fun with the topstitching on the back pockets.  I added a fun little leather heart cut out on one of the back pockets too.  I used the same technique to make the heart cut out as I did to make the knit heart dress tutorial found HERE.

I did the half fly option for my girls since it’s easier for them to get on and off on their own.  I did the full zipper option on the pair I tested for my son and I have to say the instructions were so easy and clear to follow.  I was a little nervous going into it but I was pleasantly surprised out how professional they looked when I was done.

I had a little fun with the waistband on this pair as well.  I used a blue chambray fabric and some fabric paint to make the polka dots.  I didn’t do the adjustable waist option with this pair only because my girls are growing straight up and not around so they grow out of pants in length before they do in the waist right now.

I also added a little side ankle zip for a fun little detail.  I picked up a bunch of these tiny little zippers from the LA fabric district last summer and thought this was the perfect use for them.  Plus the color matched perfectly so I just had to use them!

Here are some photos of my daughter wearing her new jeans!  She loves them and so do I!  I just LOVE the professional look of this pattern on the outside as well as the inside.  It really does look like they are store bought jeans!

I thought I would include a little tutorial on how to add the side ankle zippers in case someone would like to give it a try.  It’s super easy and can be added to any jeans pattern.

• First, you will follow the instructions on the pattern exactly until you get to the side seam.  Sew the side seam using your regular length stitch until you reach where the top of the zipper should hit.  Measure out the place before you start sewing the side seam and mark it on the jeans.  Once you reach this mark backstitch a couple of times and then switch the stitch length to a basting stitch and finish the rest of the side seam.  Do not back stitch at the end.
• Now you will want to open up the seam and line up the zipper so that it is center right over the seam and pin it.  You will also want to make sure the bottom is placed properly so that when you hem your pants it lines up perfectly with the bottom of the zipper.  So if you fold under half an inch and then again half an inch to hem your pants you will want the zipper to be one inch above the bottom edge.
• This part is a little tricky especially on the smaller sizes because the bottom opening of the pant leg is pretty small but you will now want to sew your zipper in place using your zipper foot just as you would any other zipper.
• When you reach the top keep your needle down and just pivot and turn and then finish stitching down the other side.
• Your zipper should now look like this.
• Now you will want to hem your pant legs.
• Turn your pants right side out and now you should have something that looks like this!

• I think it is a fun little detail and have actually thought about doing this for some of my own skinny jeans!
