The Fashionable Type

Today is my turn to participate in a super fun series called “The Fashionable Type” hosted by Stacey of Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy.  It is a series all about letters and words in fashion!  After coming up with a few ideas I decided I would try making my own fabric with my new sewing machine!  About a month ago I upgraded my little Brother cs6000i to a Bernina 350 SE!!  It was such a happy day at my house and I have LOVED figuring out all of the fun little things this machine can do.  I have been attending the free classes that came with the machine and at one of the classes I learned how to use the memory and store different letters or stitches to come up with words or patterns.  After playing around with it I thought it might be fun if I were to make up my own fabric using this function.

To make my fabric I drew a bunch of lines with a fabric pencil and used those as a guide to “type” the words “I LOVE YOU” across my fabric.  At first I was stitching across the entire fabric before I cut my pattern but after about 5 lines I decided I would go ahead and cut the fabric first and then finish stitching.  It went much faster this way and I didn’t waste thread.  Once I was finished stitching across all of my pattern pieces I was ready to finish my top.

The pattern I used is a self drafted pattern I created a few weeks ago.  I have made several of them thinking I would possibly turn it into a pdf pattern but that hasn’t happened yet.  It is a racer back style top and such a fun basic for summer I think.  I didn’t have my fabric planned out before I started working on this project so if I were to do it again after deciding on using this white and black heart fabric I wish I would have used the phrase “I HEART YOU” instead but I still love it just the way it is.  I guess maybe I will just have to make one more.

It’s a pretty basic and simple top but with the fabric choices and red boots I think it makes a fun outfit!  But then again, I think red cowgirl boots will make any outfit fun!!  Here are some more pictures of my little Layla in her new top.  She was feeling pretty sassy in a few of them!
