Vintage Summer

Today I am super excited to share with you the outfit I made for the sewing series Vintage May hosted by Craftiness is Not Optional and Skirt as top!  The name of the series pretty much explains everything.  We were asked to sew something vintage inspired and this is what I came up with!

I was inspired by this photo I found on Pinterest. I love the style of the 1950’s/early ’60s and wanted to make a look that resembled something you would find a young girl wearing during the summer. I love the high waisted shorts and wanted to create something similar but still wearable for my girls.

The shorts I created are self-drafted and I love the way the way they turned out! Because my girls still have nice and round little toddler bellies I didn’t make the shorts too high waisted. I don’t think they would have been comfortable in them much higher anyways. I love the big bow in the front and think it helps make them a little more youthful and fun. They are a quick and simple sew with a simple elastic waist in the back. I think I will definitely be making lots more of these shorts!

The top is basically just a leotard with a peter pan collar. I wanted it to have the look of a bathing suit but not actually be a bathing suit. I just used one of my girl’s leotards for ballet as a starting point to draft it.

And then to finish off the look I made a quick headband out of some scrap fabric. It is basically just a rectangle tied in a knot at the top. It is super simple to make but I think it is the perfect detail to finish off the look.

And there you have it!  My vintage summer look!  I kind of love it and I hope you do too!
