I have had this amazing chiffon fabric sitting in my fabric stash since March and I finally decided to make something with it. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to make something for my girls or be selfish and keep it for myself. I couldn’t get a flowing maxi dress out of my head so I finally decide to keep it for me and cross my fingers that I could make something awesome with it! I stumbled across this awesome tutorial by Cotton and Curls for a wrap maxi dress and thought it would be the perfect starting point for the dress I had in my head. You can find the tutorial HERE.
I was super hesitant at first but I decided to get my dress form out and just go for it! I know I wanted a wide shoulder/cap sleeve look so to achieve that I made the shoulders to the bodice extra wide and then gathered them slightly at the shoulder seam. It worked out perfectly and just what I had in mind.
Because the chiffon is obviously sheer I used a white lightweight peach skin type fabric to line the entire dress. Using a teal color to match the fabric might have been the proper thing to do but I loved the way the white made the chiffon look so I went for it.
I also love how the dress is a wrap dress. It allows you to see your shoes and just a little bit of leg. It is wrapped over far enough to both sides so that you don’t see too much. It’s perfect.
To attach the dress without ties I used buttons because that is all I had at the moment. I plan to get some snaps instead but just haven’t been able to yet. I absolutely LOVE this dress and plan to wear it to a wedding later this month. I’m pretty proud of this creation and am feeling more confident sewing for myself.
I hope you have found some inspiration from this post! If you have been wanting to sew for yourself just go for it!
Happy sewing!
